this malibu home featured in elle decors 20th anniversary issue, photographed by simon upton, is on one of the most important pieces of ocean front property in california.
an important piece of property needs an important designer. who is more important or talented in the design world than michael s. smith. there really are no words to describe michael’s talent- his eye, his attention to detail, his artistry. his unequivocal understanding and appreciation of art, history, furniture and design. i’m obsessed, in awe and a diligent student of his work.
michael and his clients have worked on 10 homes in the last 16 years together. that in itself says a lot. when concepting this house he and the owners visited the classical villas of palladio and the venato in venice to be inspired. they worked with architect oscar shamamian on the restoration to bring this inspiration to life. the life of a very important house!
the exterior has tremendous scale and presence but is somehow inviting and sensible. the interior has many greek and roman art and architectural influences. simple floors and monochromatic walls create the foundation for an eclectic mix of furnishings without any certain emphasis or period. everything sits together beautifully and has its own strength. surprisingly this high low house is warm, relaxing, approachable, comfortable, which is exactly what the owners wanted.
the pictures speak for themselves. thoughtful, plan-ful, artful, absolute perfection- magnificent work! the very important work of a master designer. a masterpiece. masterclass. enjoy!
