the 4th of july for me will not be filled with cook-outs, parties or parades, instead i’ll be heading up to santa barbara for a much needed restful get-away! if you are going to get away there really isn’t a better escape than this beautiful region on the california coast!
michael, lily (our french bulldog) and i are going to pack up the car soon as i finish this post and head north! i can’t wait to check into the biltmore, nestled between the pacific ocean and santa ynez mountains- sunny skies, mild climate, restful, peaceful! can’t wait! i’ll be reading my new book- beautiful ruins (the girls from keep it chic recommended it- love this blog!), catching up on my magazines, watching wimbledon, sitting in the sun at the beach and cabana club, and sleeping- all much needed!
santa barbara isn’t only beautiful and restful it’s also one of america’s most affluent and stylish demographics. santa barbara has been an elegant and chic style destinations since the turn of the century, when wealthy east coast families wintered there. the ares is filled with some of the most gorgeous homes, many of them in the spanish style brought to california in the 1850′s- along with beautiful gardens, breathtaking landscape architecture and magnificent pools!
for me there in no better way to celebrate our nations independence than with a few images of some of my favorite santa barbara homes. even better, several designed by a couple of my favorite interior designers- michael s. smith and john saladino.
happy july 4th to all of you! enjoy your day, your family, your friends, all of our blessings, most important, our wonderful country! catch up soon- santa barbara bound!

Dear Mark,
i so enjoy your blog….it brings to mind reading dominique browning’s editor letters for years and all her books too. i worked for a designer for years, and learned much about style and beauty in home and garden design. i’m in the process of moving to a smaller place after years in a beach house big enough for all our family and friends. exciting to begin again though.
enjoy your rest in heavenly santa barbara. the photos are just fabulous!
Mark-
This was a treat to see-I have been to most of these properties in Santa Barbara-as an INterior designer, it offers a lot of insight into the whole idea of california’s idea of mediterranean design. The light is so special and warm because the bay faces south-that’s unusual for california as most face west-if you don’t know about marc appleton’s work there you should check him out-he’s done a ton of work in the area and is an expert of this type of architecture. Thanks for the post. It was a treat to re visit these!
Happy Fourth of July!!!-
