who do you call when you want to create a new home with a sense of place and history? architect gil schafer of course! if i had 300 acres of vast open farmland in dutchess county, new york, and i had the means, i’d call him too!
once again i’m featuring gil schafer- one of my favorite architects! we have visited middlefield in the hudson valley, boxwood in nashville, now we visit longfield- once again a story of a great american house!
there are so many things, however, what strikes me most about longfield is how it sits so anchored on such a vast piece of property- it has presence, authority and great beauty! the main house surrounded by landscaped exterior spaces, outbuildings, and gardens, flowing gently into rolling fields of grasslands on one side and an apple orchard on the other- once again a story of a place that seems to have been around forever!
once you get past the entry you are greeted with a sense of authenticity, classicism and history. the moldings, cornices, mantles and baseboards are a story in themselves. what i love most about longfield’s story is that an interior designer wasn’t added into the mix. the owners simply wanted help with a few fabrics and wallpapers to be added to their exiting furnishings and collections- they wanted to continue the story begun by the architecture!
longfield- a story of architecture! gil schafer does it once again!
photographs of longfield by eric paisecki for architectural digest and from the book the great american house: tradition for the way we live now.
