LAUREN SANTO DOMINGO

over the last year i’ve interviewed so many inspiring people in my “mds interviews” series. it’s been a thrill and an honor to get to know more about all the designers i admire so much. it seems only natural to broaden the series and interview not only designers, but style icons and tastemakers as well,  after all the blog is about, “chic people, glamorous places and stylish things!” well, i cannot think of anyone better to kick us off in this new direction than lauren santo domingo– can you?

lauren has without a doubt been featured, mentioned, adored, discussed, worshipped on this blog more than any other person- i love everything about her, i find her to be absolute perfection! she has so much style, style that is from another time, yet so modern, so current, so relevant. she knows when to look back and knows when to look forward. she’s extremely witty, elegant, worldly, beautiful, and of course chic!

we all know she’s the chicest lady around, she might quite possibly be the brightest too! her new on-line designer trunk show and curated boutique, moda operandi, has taken the fashion world by storm- so innovative, so smart and so good!

she continues to be a contributing editor for vogue, i love apt with lsd on vogue.com,. she was  named to vanity fairs 2012 new establishment portfolio, and might i add, if you want to see more of her just tune into the blog every saturday, she’s always on my weekly “MDS Best Dressed List,” most weeks she tops the list.

lauren has that special something- she’s the woman with it all. the woman every woman wants to be, the woman every man wants to be with, and most certainly the lady every lifestyle blogger wants to interview. so here it is- “mds interviews” the lsd, the modern day swan. enjoy!

MDS- How would you define your style?

LSD- I like to think that I’m both exacting and spontaneous at the same time. I enjoy the process of selecting, tailoring and maintaining my wardrobe so when it comes time to getting dressed I need to only consider my mood and the weather. Mind you, these two variables are equally unpredictable.

MDS- Where did you grow up and how do you think that has influenced your style?

LSD- I grew up in Old Greenwich, an understated and close-knit coastal hamlet of Greenwich, CT. Or at least it was when I was growing up. I wore a uniform at Greenwich Academy, and when I moved on to boarding school at Kent I had a strict dress code. Needless to say, many demerits were issued and Discipline Committees were held in the evolution of my personal style.

MDS- Who or what is inspiring you right now?

LSD- I am inspired mostly by generations before mine. Women like Annette de la Renta, Deeda Blair, Jayne Wrightsman, Marella Agnelli. They seem to live with a style that is uniquely their own. Style that was developed over time, with a unique character and charisma. Style that is deeply personal and not a commodity purchased for them by an interior designer, art consultant or fashion stylist. I strongly believe that that the biggest mistake one can make in life is to listen too much to other people. Besides, those ladies had the best jewels.

MDS- Is there anything you obsessively collect?

LSD- I am too fickle to start one collection. My tastes and interests change far too quickly. Besides, as I am incapable of doing anything in moderation: A ‘collection’ could quickly become out-of-control and very expensive.

MDS- Fill in the blank: “I could never own too many _________”

LSD- “I could never own too many minaudieres”

MDS- Who are your style icons? Who is in your best-dressed hall of fame?

LSD- Jayne Wrightsman is perfect in my estimation.

Jayne Wrightsman- chic!

MDS- What do you want to be known for?

LSD- I would most like to be remembered by my family and friends as a loving grand-mother and hopefully great-grandmother. And also, before I die, for having achieved the perfect shade of blonde.

MDS- What’s next for The LSD?

LSD- It is impossible for me to think much further than FW14, which is the season being presented right now on catwalks in Paris and currently being offered for preorder on Moda Operandi (shop here) . It seems that orange is the new pink, in case you were wondering.

  1. Thank you for sharing another inspiring interview. I do like her style, whether she’s looking casual or dressed up, and I love the reading nook in her Paris home. she has so many books!

  2. I’ve Read some of the comments about the “Cigarette” and totally disagree. there is an old time elegance to a woman holding a cigarette. it’s even “chic” to some. these are personal choices that each is free to make for themselves and in no way do i feel is “detracts” from their style, effortless elegance, or “chicness”. in fact i applaud her chutzpah for not caring what people think about her personal choices. that is chic!!!!!

  3. I adore her. She is timeless, and over tIme, will be in thE same category as Mrs. De la Renta, mrs. Blair, mrs. WRightsmaN, & mrs agnellI. Delighted to see tHat she is grateFul & uniQue.

Fabulous interview. She is one to keep up with, because she has the pulse on everything. FasHion, art, dEsign, enTertaining, and well-Read.
