Volume III - Birmingham Sunroom
Continuing our celebration of fifteen years of rooms we love, we are revisiting a space that embodies our enduring love of indoor-outdoor living: a sunroom from our project in Birmingham, Alabama, completed in 2018.
The inspiration for this room begins at our muse Bunny Mellon’s Oak Spring Farm, specifically her iconic potting shed covered in hand-painted trompe l’oeil panels that depict climbing vines and garden tools. Bunny understood that a garden could be as considered as any drawing room, and that green is always an excellent choice.
While ideating on this Volume's mood board, the Fall 2026 Dior Show by Jonathan Anderson was presented in the Tuileries Garden in Paris. It perfectly coincided with this Volume's theme of gardens and the color green. From the lily pads to the metal chairs painted the perfect color green, it was a wellspring of beauty and inspiration.
Mrs. Mellon’s love of gardens continues to guide my own design ethos. I have always believed that the most successful interiors begin with the landscape outside. In Birmingham, the sunroom was conceived as an extension of the garden, blurring the line between indoors and out.
The foundation of the space is paint. Every piece of wicker seating was finished in the same deep green, creating cohesion and calm. The wood floors were painted a soft, light green to reflect natural light and lift the entire room. This project is a reminder of the transformative power of paint and that when repetition is intentional, it simplifies the eye and strengthens the overall composition.
The cushions and drapery are upholstered in one of my favorite leafy patterns from Colefax & Fowler, reinforcing the botanical narrative. On the game table, we used a classic fabric from Sister Parish, whose heritage patterns always bring a sense of familiarity and warmth. These fabric-swathed game tables have become a signature design element for our firm. Wicker plays a central role in the room’s character, and one of our favorite makers, long admired for craftsmanship and tradition, is Bielecky Brothers, whose pieces embody the enduring appeal of woven furniture.
This Birmingham sunroom remains one of my favorite rooms because it captures something essential: that a single color, thoughtfully layered with an iconic hero fabric, can create a world of depth. It is a room rooted in nature, guided by history, and shaped by the belief that beauty is often found just beyond the window.
