South for the Winter
In southern Florida, January often feels more like summer than winter, with warm tropical air and vibrant gardens in full bloom. The atmosphere is infused with the scent of salt marshes and citrus groves, creating the perfect environment for hummingbirds to winter. The project featured this month, and in chapter one of Forever Beautiful, captures this essence. Though built only a few decades ago, it instantly reminded me of the timeless charm of Vizcaya, the early 20th-century Italian Renaissance villa nestled along Biscayne Bay. To enhance this Old World feel, we preserved the original travertine floors and columns and introduced Italian influences throughout, including handcrafted Bonacina wicker furniture, made in Italy since 1889.
This home is rich with thoughtful details - hand-painted walls and intricate stenciling by artist Joseph Steiert, luxurious Fortuny fabrics, and custom lampshades that add depth and refinement. The lush outdoor landscape is brought inside with banana leaf trees, palms, and sword ferns, softening the interiors and creating a seamless connection between the inside and out. Verdigris-finished lighting fixtures further enhance the space, evoking the charm of a secret garden.

Departing from convention, we set out to design fabrics that defy stereotypes, focusing on grounding solids, rich textures, small scale prints, and a timeless color palette that forms the cornerstone of every project. Additionally, we wanted to create wallpaper panels that effortlessly work back to our existing fabrics with Schumacher.

We are excited to introduce our new Orange Hill Farm Collection for Samuel & Sons! Drawing inspiration from Mark's personal country retreat and citrus farm in Ojai, California, this collection of passementerie embodies the timeless allure of country living and the vibrant beauty of citrus groves. This collection is thoughtfully divided into three sub-collections - City, Coastal, and Country - and each sub-collection is based around motifs that our firm is recognized for - the Rosette, the Stripe, and the Check.
